Tell us what Athens means to you

  • What makes this a good place to live? What are the downsides?

I live in West Athens currently as a 14 year old. Yes we have shootings and drugs but it is not as bad as the media portrays us. We are not all part of the crenshaw mafia or rob liquor stores. Kids like my classmates and I need to reform our hood.

Dear Sir,

We are currently looking to buy a house. Is Athens a good place to live with my 2 daughters. Our priority is our safety since we are new in the country and we have to commute to work .

Thank you

I grew on Ruthelen St. in the 50's and 60's. Back then we called our unincorporated part of town Southwest L.A. Went to movies at the Rio Theatre on Western, explored for buried treasure in the "dips," now the site of a community college. My parents were a part of the post Watts riots flight to other suburbs. When I drove around my old neighborhood about 12 years ago I was surprised how nice everything looked. How middle class. And home prices around 2005 nearly floored me--Beverly Hills prices compared to what I pay for a similar home here in Ohio. Some good memories... especially hanging out at Holly Park.
