L.A.'s Eastside: Where do you draw the line?

“ What the heck is the EASTSIDE??? Is this a new euphemism for a tough neighborhood that's predominantly Hispanic? I grew up in Boyle Heights. You knew what communities east of the river were part of East L.A. Anything directly west of the river from East L.A. was downtown. You knew any part of the "city" of L.A. east of the river was considered East L.A. Any community north of the 10 fwy, east of the 710 that was not Monterey Park, and south of the 5 freeways that was not an incorporated city WAS NOT East Los Angeles. Any Incorporated city east of the River IS NOT East Los Angeles. I think the fallacy is starting with the notion that downtown is in the east side. Down town is down town. It all stems from there. ” — Karim Garcia from Murrieta, CA, Feb. 18, 2014, 1:05 p.m.
