L.A.'s Eastside: Where do you draw the line?

“ Downtown is the center "El Centro" of L.A., to the south there's "South Central L.A.", it's just south of downtown and that 's the name that area was given a long time ago. To the east of downtown just across the river is "East L.A.' Again it was just "east" of downtown. "West L.A." came sometime later, it's really far west of downtown, but that's the name it was given. For whatever reason Echo Park, Silver Lake, Chavez Ravine and all other communities in that area weren't given the name of "North L.A.", neither was Pasadena, which was and is north of downtown. San Pedro isn't called "South L.A." either, even though it's south of downtown. You can't just start calling an area "East L.A." even though it's geographically north of downtown. a Pico -Union area isn't going to start being referred to as "West L.A." anytime soon. ” — R.
